Team of colleagues hold up their finished pottery creations at a team building workshop in Brighton

If you're searching for a corporate away day idea that doesn't involve trust falls, quiz nights, or yet another escape room, we might have exactly what you're looking for.

At Hot Fox Pottery, we run pottery team-building workshops for corporate groups across Brighton and the South East — and we've noticed something every single time: people arrive a little unsure, and leave genuinely delighted.

Here's why more and more HR managers and event planners are choosing pottery for their next team away day.

It works for every kind of team

One of the hardest things about planning a team-building activity is finding something that works for everyone. Pottery is genuinely inclusive. There's no physical ability required, no prior experience needed, and no competitive element that makes quieter team members shrink back.

In fact, working with clay has a wonderful way of levelling the playing field. The colleague who's always loudest in meetings might find hand-building a real challenge, while someone who rarely speaks up turns out to have a natural touch. It shifts the dynamic in a way that's subtle but real — and that's exactly what good team-building should do.

It's a genuine mindfulness activity — not a gimmick

Workplace wellness is high on every HR agenda right now, and with good reason. Pottery isn't just fun — research backs up what we see every session. A BBC Arts survey of almost 50,000 people in the UK, carried out in collaboration with University College London, found that over three quarters said creativity could help block out stress and anxiety.

Research from UCL's MARCH mental health network also found that creative activities lower stress hormones such as cortisol and are linked with dopamine release.

When your team is working with clay, they can't check their phones. They can't think about their inbox. They're just making something — and that hour or two of genuine mental rest is something most office workers rarely get.

They leave with something real

At the end of a Hot Fox Pottery workshop, every participant takes home a handmade stoneware piece — a coffee cup, plant pot, or tea-light holder, fired and glazed by us and posted or collected a few weeks later.

That tangible reminder of the day is something no team dinner or escape room can offer. It sits on their desk or in their kitchen, and every time they use it, they're reminded of a genuinely good day.

Flexible enough to fit your team

Our signature team-building workshop runs for two hours and caters for groups of 6 to 20 people, from £45 per person including all materials, firing, and glazing. For larger groups of up to 35, we offer bespoke sessions.

We can come to your office or venue anywhere within 50 miles of Brighton, or host you at our own studio or one of our partner venues in Brighton town centre — including fully accessible options.

We also offer our Clay Consequences icebreaker game as an optional add-on — a brilliant way to get people laughing and talking before they pick up the clay.
